Richmond Concert Band

Since 1971, the Richmond Concert Band has been entertaining audiences throughout the Richmond area and beyond. From Goochland to Virginia Beach and from Ashland to Emporia, the band has presented its special brand of family entertainment to audiences of all sizes.

About Us

Over the years we have been invited to be part of many important and historic occasions. As part of our country’s Bicentennial Celebration, we presented a special concert in the Yorktown area. We performed at Berkeley Plantation for several of the First Thanksgiving reenactments, at Capitol Square for Richmond’s Centennial Celebration as the State Capitol and at Rockett’s Landing for the Rock the Boat celebration as part of the Jamestown 400 celebration.

We played a concert in support of our troops serving in Desert Storm, and another in September 2001 to remember those who died and to honor the heroes of “9/11.” And in 2018 we presented a special concert to recognize the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1.

A highlight for us was performing at the 1985 Association of Concert Bands convention that was held in Virginia Beach.
We have also been part of many area annual events, from Easter on Parade to Musical Mondays at Maymont; from the Easter weekend at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden to July 4th at Dogwood Dell. And we have been fortunate to perform at some of Richmond’s “treasures” including Maymont and Agecroft Hall.

In addition to the concerts we present, we have two special initiatives to help young musicians in the Richmond Public Schools. Our John Perkins Scholarship supports public school music education by providing financial assistance to a student attending one of Richmond’s high schools who plans to take private instrument lessons or attend a band camp or clinic. And our Old Instruments for Young Hands initiative supports Richmond’s instrumental music programs.

In 2016 we were voted “The Best Local Band” by the readers of the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Members of the Richmond Concert Band enjoy making music as part of a concert band. The band rehearses Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church in the Fan. Membership in the Richmond Concert Band is open to anyone who plays a band instrument and wants to be a part of an adult concert band. Auditions are not required.
